Tooth Whitening

What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is a cosmetic dental treatment that safely lightens the natural colour of your teeth. It uses professional whitening agents to reduce staining and discolouration, helping you achieve a brighter, healthier-looking smile.
-
What causes teeth to become stained?
Common causes of tooth staining include tea, coffee, red wine, curry, smoking, and ageing. Certain medications, trauma to a tooth, or previous dental treatments can also affect tooth colour. Even with good oral hygiene, some discolouration is unavoidable over time.
-
Is tooth whitening safe?
Yes. When carried out or prescribed by a GDC-registered dentist tooth whitening is completely safe. UK law only allows dental professionals to supply whitening products containing hydrogen peroxide above 0.1% and it is carefully formulated to protect your teeth and gums. Over the counter or unregulated products may carry higher risks, which is why professional guidance is recommended.
-
How long do tooth whitening results last?
Tooth whitening results can last from several months to a few years. Longevity depends on lifestyle habits such as smoking, diet, and oral hygiene. Regular dental check-ups and avoiding heavily staining foods and drinks can help maintain your results for longer.
-
Will tooth whitening damage my teeth?
No. When professionally provided, tooth whitening does not damage healthy enamel. Some patients may experience temporary tooth sensitivity, but this usually settles within a few days. Your dentist can advise on sensitivity management if needed, but some sensitive toothpaste usually does the trick.
-
Does tooth whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings?
No. Tooth whitening only affects natural tooth enamel. Existing crowns, veneers, bridges, and fillings will not change colour. Your dentist can discuss replacement options if needed to match your whitened teeth.
-
Is tooth whitening painful?
Most patients experience little or no discomfort. Mild sensitivity or temporary gum irritation can occur, particularly during the early stages of treatment, but this is usually short-lived and manageable.
-
How white will my teeth go?
Results vary depending on your natural tooth shade and the type of staining present. Tooth whitening enhances your natural smile rather than producing an artificial white appearance, giving a brighter but natural-looking result.
-
How long does tooth whitening treatment take?
Dentist-prescribed home whitening usually involves wearing custom-made trays for a set period each day over one to two weeks. Tooth whitening strips (prescription for the dentist, not online ones), are also available for easy, quick and effective brighten of your teeth – perfect for post-whitening maintenance or quick freshen up of your smile.
-
Who is suitable for tooth whitening?
Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are suitable for tooth whitening. It may not be recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding patients, or those with untreated decay or gum disease. A full dental examination is required before starting any whitening treatment.
